One-Act Play

In the course I completed in college, I took several literature-related subjects, including “Drama” and “Shakespeare.” That’s where my romance with theater began. I found a platform for my interest in drama when I became a teacher at a high school (Sta. Teresa College) in Bauan, Batangas. There, I founded the “Teatrong Pang-gabi” for the “night students” until I was allowed to lead the main theatre group of the school, “Teatro Teresiana.”
From my perspective, writing a play is not difficult. If you think about it, our daily lives are like a play. You and I are characters playing in a drama called life. The world we live in is one big stage. Am I right? Reflect on that.
The world is like one big stage, and people are like actors. Every day, a story unfolds. The question is, if your life is a story and the world is the stage, who writes the story?
Of course, the first thing you’d think of is the Lord, right? If that’s what you believe, I won’t contradict you. But if you ask me, the answer to the question of who writes the story is – you.
You are the one who writes your story. The Lord created the stage and gave you the pen and paper to write your story. That’s my perspective.
The Lord has given you the freedom to write your own story. He won’t do it for you. But you will decide whether to write your story or let someone else write it. It’s up to you.
You will decide whether your story is a drama or a comedy – hopefully not a tragedy. You will also determine and choose the characters acting out your story. And it’s up to you whether you are the hero, the villain, or just a background character with no importance. You also decide what kind of person others will see when they watch you perform on the stage of your life.
You are the writer, the one who chooses the characters, and you are also the director. You will decide whether to make your story complicated or straightforward. Will it be exciting, filled with action and romance? Will it teach a lesson or go in the opposite direction? It’s your story, so it’s up to you.
As I said, writing a play is not hard. Just close your eyes and think about your life, full of drama and emotions, and you’ll find plenty of stories to write. Try it.
